Senators hit suspension saying move adversely affected Filipino commuters

  MANILA – Philippine land transportation regulators have ordered the suspension of Uber operations in the country for one month after the transport network company (TNC) violated a July 26 directive against accepting and activating new drivers on its ride-hailing platform. Uber filed a motion for reconsideration on Tuesday, a day after the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) issued the suspension order against Uber. The LTFRB rejected the appeal and warned that violators will be fined 120,000 pesos and their vehicles impounded for three months. Uber said in its motion for reconsideration that with the LTFRB's suspension order "tens of thousands of riders were left stranded, causing needless inconvenience while drivers were unable to access the earning opportunities they rely on." LTFRB chairman Martin Delgra III explained that while Uber asked for reconsideration of the suspension order, the TNC's defiance of the board's directives was an "act of contempt." The LTFRB called off implementation of its July 11 order to apprehend vehicles of TNCs that operate without a license after Uber and Grab filed a motion for reconsideration before the crackdown was to be enforced on July 26. The board in the meantime ordered Uber and Grab to desist from activating and accepting and activating new members on their respective apps. Uber, for its part, said it was disappointed with the rejection of its motion for reconsideration of the suspension order but will comply with the directive. Meanwhile, senators criticized the LTFRB's suspension of Uber operations as they pointed out that Filipino commuters are the ones who'd suffer because of it. Senator Sherwin Gatchalian said the suspension order "is a hasty and untimely decision which will cause further frustration and chaos for hundreds of thousands of commuters who have no choice but to make the most out of Metro Manila's inadequate public transportation system." Senator Paolo Benigno Aquino IV said suspending Uber's operations punishes the riders and the drivers more than Uber itself.
