Five rescue workers were killed in the Philippines by a typhoon that flooded homes and left millions without electricity. The rescuers were washed away in flash floods while carrying out operations in the San Miguel district, north of Manila. Typhoon Karding wreaked havoc on the district, leaving some people stranded on their roofs while others plunged through chest-high flood waters. The typhoon caused gusts of up to 240kph (149mph) on Luzon, where more than half of the country's 110 million population live. Karding made landfall as a super typhoon but eventually weakened at 20:20 local time (12:20 GMT) on Sunday. It is set to depart the Philippines on Monday evening. BKM/ Expat Media
