Former Miss Universe launches HIV awareness campaign

  MANILA – Former Miss Universe Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach launched early this week a HIV information campaign for youths in the Philippines as she expressed concern over fast-rising number of HIV cases in the country.
During the launching held last Wednesday, Wurtzbach also took an HIV test with the hope of encouraging high-risk sectors of society to do the same and erase the stigma and discrimination against persons living with HIV (PLHIVs). The UN and health department revealed last week that the number of new HIV cases in the Philippines rose by 140 percent from 2010 to last year, bucking a trend in the Asia Pacific region that saw HIV cases go down by 13 percent in the same period. Wurtzbach said in a press conference for the launching of her HIV awareness campaign: "It is very tricky in the Philippines because we're a predominantly Catholic country and we are conservative. That's why it can be quite a challenge to spread awareness on this issue. This is a problem that's really happening right now and if we don't do anything about it, we're gonna be number one in the world." When Wurtzbach won as Miss Universe in 2015, she had made HIV awareness as her advocacy. UNAIDS made her a goodwill ambassadress for Asia and the Pacific. Meanwhile, Wurtzbach expressed support for a proposed law that would allow 15 year olds to get an HIV test without parental consent. The current minimum age is 18. The law was proposed after the health department reported that most new HIV cases were among men having sex with men (MSMs) who, on average, started having unsafe sex at 16 before they had begun using condoms or taken tests, increasing the risk of opportunistic infections related to HIV.
