There have been discussions going around suggesting that owners of new cars do not need to buy Salik tags, but Salik has set the record straight. Salik, the operator that manages Dubai's toll system, reiterates that motorists are required to purchase a Salik tag when they get a new car and place it on the windshield. According to the operator, sticking the tag on the car windshield is mandatory as per law number 22 for 2006. The tag allows the system to identify vehicles quickly and accurately. As the car passes through a toll gate, the system will detect the tag and automatically deduct Dh4. Where should the Salik tag be placed? According to Salik, the tag should be placed at the top centre of your windshield. It should be positioned one centimetre below your rearview mirror. If your car has a metallic or metallised windshield, the Salik tag should be placed on the dotted area of the windshield. If the windshield has a darker tinted area, place the tag on the lighter area of the windshield. You will receive an envelope providing detailed instructions as soon as you purchase a new Salik tag. Salik is an electric toll system in Dubai that operates using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) which allows to read the tags. It was launched by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) on July 1, 2007. Motorists are required to buy a Dh100 Salik tag that will be placed on their windshield.
