PNP prepares tight security for Duterte’s 80th birthday rally

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is finalizing security measures for an upcoming prayer rally set to mark the 80th birthday of former president Rodrigo Duterte on March 28. PNP spokesperson Brigadier General Jean Fajardo confirmed that the Police Regional Office 11 (Davao) and Davao City local government have been coordinating to ensure a safe and orderly gathering in Davao City. “The information provided to us indicates that it will be a prayer rally, and we expect a large turnout, considering that the former president hails from Davao,” Fajardo said in a virtual press briefing. Local authorities have yet to provide an official estimate of attendees, but the PNP is preparing crowd control and security protocols to prevent any potential disturbances. Duterte, currently detained at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague, faces crimes against humanity charges for his controversial war on drugs, which resulted in thousands of deaths during his time as Davao City mayor and later as president. His supporters continue to call for his return to the Philippines, organizing rallies in various parts of the country.
