Fake UAE government services advertised through social media
Police warned of social media accounts offering fake government services as the victims of the scam increased. Several residents across the emirates have been the victims of so-called licensed company representatives advertising government services online for a nominal fee. The services include completing residency procedures, vehicle licenses, apartment rental contracts, and school enrollments for children. Major General Saif Al Zari Al Shamsi, Sharjah Police Commander in chief warned against dealing with unofficial social media accounts, being deceived by attractive addresses, and providing official documents with personal information that can be used as blackmail by the fraudsters for money. He explained that these scammers are likely part of organized fraud networks that target families and young people in the Gulf and Arab countries with social networking sites as their main platform for their illicit activities. The Sharjah Police has taken measures including the creation of electronic patrols through monitoring suspicious and fake accounts of impersonators as well as contacting the International Police (Interpol) for the situation where the scammers originate outside the country. The Dubai Police stated that the department received many complaints regarding this kind of fraud, particularly with the pandemic that reduced their salaries and mobility, prompting the residents to opt for alleged services with smaller fees compared to the actual service charges. The charges against the scammers stealing money through fraud may include imprisonment for no less than two years term and a fine of Dh20,000.
