Congressmen cry foul over defeat saying stats showed Pacquiao landing more punches

  MANILA – Political allies of Manny Pacquiao and Malacañang Palace rained plaudits on the Filipino boxer-senator despite losing to Australian fighter Jeff Horn in a controversial unanimous decision. Two legislators however cried foul over Pacquiao's loss to Horn even if the fight statistics showed that the Filipino boxing icon landed more punches and jabs on Horn. Congressman Karlo Nograles of Davao del Sur – a province in Mindanao where Pacquiao hails from and Pacquiao's fellow senators Sonny Angara, Nancy Binay, Joel Villanueva and Cynthia Villar lauded Pacquiao for putting up a good fight. Nograles said Pacquiao would always be the people's champion as he urged Filipinos to continue supporting the eight-division boxer turned senator who has brought honor to the Philippines. Angara and Villanueva said Filipinos will always be proud of him – win or lose. Binay lauded Pacquiao for being gracious in defeat while Villar said despite his loss, Pacquiao is "the greatest boxer of our time." In Malacañang Palace, Presidential spokesman Ernesto Abella said: "The Palace would like to thank the country for its unwavering support for Manny Pacquiao in his hour of victory and even on his hour of defeat." "Manny Pacquiao's loss in Brisbane would not diminish the honors he bestowed to the people and to the flag," Abella also said. Congressman Nograles said it was Pacquiao who clearly won the fight, an observation expressed by many netizens, sports analysts and by American sports and entertainment celebrities. Nograles said Horn was "visibly hurt" towards the end of the match "that the referee even wanted to stop the fight." His brother, party-list legislator Jerico Nograles, said the judges' scorecards were contradicted by the fight's statistics that showed Pacquiao's having the upperhard. The three judges scored 111-117, 113-115 and 113-115 in favor of Horn. Pacquiao said he respects the judges' decision. Horn said he is open to a rematch which is provided for in the contract to fight Pacquiao as he called on American superstar boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. to a bout. Meanwhile, Filipino boxing analyst Ed Tolentino told ABS-CBN that Horn did well and that the unanimous decision to declare the Australian as victor was fair. Tolentino said he had Horn head of Pacquiao in his unofficial scorecard in seven rounds and that Pacquiao ramped it up after that. Tolentino also said Pacquiao should already retire from boxing because of his age. Pacquiao is 39 years old. He believes that it is only Pacquiao's love for the sport that keeps him going and that if Pacquiao were to retire, there are rising Filipino boxers waiting in the wings to take Pacquiao's place in the international arena.
