Denzel Washington, Emma Stone pick up acting awards

  LOS ANGELES – The 23rd Screen Actors Guild (SAG) awards ceremony became a platform for actors and actresses to air their views on politics, particularly about the immigration ban imposed by newly-inaugurated President Donald Trump. From Ashton Kutcher to Julia Louis-Dreyfus, several of the presenters and awardees did not mince words about the ban. Trump earlier ordered prohibited travelers from seven Muslim-dominated countries namely, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen from entering the US for 90 days pending review of their background and residency or travel documents as part of the Trump administration's efforts to keep away potential terrorists. Trump's order issued last Friday (US time) prompted protests in the US and backlog in airports worldwide as travelers from the seven countries mentioned in the order were prevented from leaving. Kutcher declared, "I am a citizen of the world" as he greeted those at the airports around in the world who were unable to leave from the seven Muslim countries for the US because of the immigration ban. Dreyfus, for her part, called the ban "a blemish and un-American." The SAG, meanwhile, honored the cast of "Hidden Figures" for outstanding performance by a cast in a theatrical motion picture in ceremonies held Sunday (US time) at the Shrine Auditorium. Unlike other award bodies, the SAG does not choose a best picture awardee but picks the best performance of a cast in a motion picture or in a TV series. In the TV category, the best acting by a cast in a drama series went to Netflix's "Stranger Things" and for outstanding performance by a cast in a comedy series, the award went to "Orange Is The New Black." Denzel Washington won as best actor for the movie "Fences" while Emma Stone was best actress for the musical-love story "La La Land." The SAG, whose members are composed of actors and actresses, choose the movie and television awardees from their colleagues who have been nominated in various categories. The SAG is usually a good predictor of who will take home the Oscar awards since the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) is composed of members of the film industry.
