Pope Francis to make landmark visit to UAE

  DUBAI – Pope Francis will be visiting the UAE for the first time in February, according to the Vatican on Thursday (December 6). The pontiff’s scheduled visit has been hailed as a landmark moment for Catholics and interfaith relations in the Gulf. News of Pope Francis’ visit comes after an official invitation from the UAE in June. In a Twitter post on Thursday, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, said the visit would "strengthen our ties and understanding of each other". In 2010, the UAE appointed its first woman ambassador to the Vatican, Hissa Al Otaiba. In 2016, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, visited the Vatican.
