Teen claims 'djinn' told him to kill father but he doesn't remember carrying out deed

  SHARJAH – An 18-year-old Sudanese-American national who claimed being "possessed by a djinn" was meted a three-year jail term on Monday for killing his father following an argument in November last year. Sharjah Sharia Court presiding judge Hussain Al Assoufi announced the sentence at the end of the trial of the defendant, who killed his father by smashing his head with a fire extinguisher on November 14 last year. The victim was identified only as O.Y.A. The defendant's family however had pardoned the young man, thus avoiding capital punishment and playing blood money. Prosecutors had sought capital punishment for the suspect. During the trial, the defendant's uncle said his nephew had undergone psychiatric treatment, showing medical records to support his claim. The defendant, for his part, said he received a "message from a djinn (a spirit that can be either good or evil) to kill his father but doesn't remember carrying out the killing. Police records showed that the incident between the defendant and the victim happened on November 14 last year at about 12 a.m. at the shop owned by the victim in Sharjah. Prior to the killing, an argument occurred between the young man and his father. At the height of the quarrel, the young man became violent, picked up a nearby extinguisher, and hit his father on the head. Meanwhile, Salem Sahoo, lawyer of the defendant, will file an appeal of the sentence, citing a report from Al Amal Hospital showing that the suspect was unaware of his actions. He also said the defendant underwent psychiatric treatment at the hospital and showed signs of improvement. Police said the accused lived and studied in the U.S. but was brought back to the UAE by the victim due to alleged mental instability, prompting the family to put the defendant under psychiatric treatment.
