Postpone some Ramadan customs in UAE amid Covid-19, says official
DUBAI – The spokeswoman for the UAE health sector urged residents on Wednesday (April 22) to consider postponing some Ramadan customs due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Dr. Farida Al Hosani made the statement as she announced 483 new cases of coronavirus in the country, bringing the total number of cases to 8,238. “We will have to change the way we do Ramadan this year. Let us postpone some customs like Suhoor with friends,” Al Hosani said. Ramadan is likely to begin on April 24, subject to the sighting of the moon. A UAE committee is set to meet on Thursday to begin moon sighting. “Ramadan will be difficult for us but it's an opportunity for all to stay at home and have positive behaviour - healthy eating and working out and be close to children,” Al Hosani said. According to the UAE Council for Fatwa, Muslims who have symptoms of Covid-19 may choose not to fast during Ramadan. Workers in the health sectors may also opt not to fast during their work days so as not to affect their immunity, the council added. “We can continue to donate to charity and keep giving through smart platforms and applications,” A Hosani said.
