Pre-marital health screenings for expats, Emiratis at 25 UAE centres

  DUBAI – Expat and Emirati couples may now get pre-marital health exams at 25 centres across the UAE, according to the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MOHAP). The service, offered by MOHAP, allows couples to get confidential pre-marital screening for genetic diseases and sexually transmitted diseases. The service is available to anyone aged 18 or older. The ministry said the health results are issued within three to 10 working days, with results valid for three months. "It decreases and prevents the transmission of some sexually transmitted diseases and reduces mother-to-child transmissions of some infectious diseases that might lead to congenital anomalies or mental retardation, and sometimes even death,” according to MOHAP. Tests cover AIDS, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, syphilis, German measles, sickle cell anaemia and haemoglobin differences. According to MOHAP, undergoing pre-marital health screening “alleviates anxiety, especially if there is a family history of certain genetic diseases or marriage between relatives, as well as decreases the financial, physical, and psychological burden on families through proper diagnosis and counseling."
