Houston Rockets stalwart calls practice 'a disgrace' to league

HOUSTON, Texas - Patrick Beverley of the Houston Rockets blasted the trend of resting healthy players for "preventive maintenance", describing it as a "disgrace" to the basketball association. In an interview after his team won against the Oklahoma City Thunder 137-125 last Sunday, Beverley couldn't hide his displeasure over the practice of letting uninjured players rest. "I think that's bulls***.....that's a disgrace to this league. I think that fans deserve better," said Beverley. "I could care less about coaches asking players to rest or not. It's up to you to play or not, and if you don't, you're disrespecting the game. And I don't believe in disrespecting the game, because there was a time where I wasn't playing in the NBA and I was trying to get here. So me resting, I feel like, is disrespecting me, disrespecting the name on the front of the jersey and disrespecting the name on the back of the jersey," said a frustrated Beverley. The precautionary resting of healthy players became an issue in the league after the Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers rested their stalwarts for nationally-televised Saturday game matches. The move earned the ire of NBA officials. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver had sent a memorandum to all teams and franchise owners urging them to be involved in any decision about precautionary resting of any player, calling it "an extremely significant issue for the league" that affects "perception of our game." Meanwhile, the Houston Rockets team has desisted from resting its star players even if one of them, James Harden, has a sore wrist, which the latter wrapped in tape. Asked bysports journalists if he planned to rest or play when he's able, Harden just smiled.
