Movie's director justifies dog's slaughter as filmfest withdraws award given to film

  MANILA – The producers of "Oro", one of the entries in the 2016 Metro Manila Film Festival, have met strong criticism for the killing of a dog in the movie. "Oro" director Alvin Yapan however justified the animal's slaughter because it did happen based on a witness's recollection of events related to the "Gata 4 massacre" on which the movie was based on. Despite the justification, the family of the late action superstar Fernando Poe Jr. or FPJ and the filmfest organizers took back the FPJ Memorial Award given to the movie on the grounds of animal cruelty. Four miners were killed in a town in Caramoan town in Camarines Sur province in 2014, an incident that came to be known as the "Gata 4 massacre." Murder charges were filed against 21 persons involved in the massacre. Yap and the producers decided to delete the scene instead from copies of the movie that started showing last December 25 until January 3. The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (Paws) earlier lodged a letter-complaint before the organizers of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) regarding the slaughter of a dog in "Oro." In a letter to the MMFF, the PAWS said: "A few days ago, our organization communicated with Shandii Bacolod, producer of the film, who initially said no animal was harmed or killed for the movie. Later on, on the Official Facebook Page of the film, Director Alvin Yapan stated that the crew 'shot a practice among ruralfolk where dogs are part of their foodfare." "Killing dogs for their meat is a violation of the Animal Welfare Act or RA8485, as amended by RA 10631. In the said national law, even the killing of dogs as part of religious ritual or ethnic custom of indigenous cultural communitites shall be done with proper coordination with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) and the Committee on Animal Welfare (CAW)," the PAWS also aid. Moviegoers, particularly animal lovers, took to social media to criticize the film, its director and producers for the slaughter of the dog. Meanwhile, Yapan denied the dog was killed just for the film and that the dog's killing really happened as told by a witness of the Gata 4 massacre. He said it is a practice by people in far-flung communities to kill a dog and eat its meat in a drinking session. Even if the controversial scene had been deleted from the movie, PAWS executive director Anna Cabrera said the move is not enough and that the producers and director hould be penalized. Cabrera said they will file a complaint against the producers of "Oro". At the Senate, Sen. Grace Poe, daughter of Poe Jr., called on the organizers of the filmfest to take back the FPJ ward given to "Oro" if proven that a dog was killed in the movie, which Yapan confirmed. The award was one of the honors given to the movie during the MMFF awards held last December 29.
