Trump, Putin meet and talk but US and Russia disagree on what they discussed

HAMBURG – Protests and lootings marred Friday's G20 summit in this German city, injuring 197 policemen and several civilians. The G20 or Group of 20 summit is an international forum for leaders, central bank governors and finance ministers of 20 major economies. Those attending the summit are the heads of state of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, South Africa, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Turkey, UK, US and the European Union (represented by the European Council). Protestors set up bonfires in Hamburg's streets, looted shops and hurled blocks of pavements at responding anti-riot officers. A CNN report said protestors would throw rocks and bottles at the police officers and retreat. They repeated the act many times. Police said the protestors also hurled bottles of champagne they looted from stores into the bonfires they set in the streets to keep the anti-riot personnel away. But just before midnight last night, police moved forward and fired teargas, water cannons and flash-bang grenades at the protestors. Eighty-seven people were arrested and 17 others were detained since the protests began, Hamburg police tweeted. Friday's protests prevented US First Lady Melania Trump from attending an event for spouses of G20 leaders, according to Mrs. Trump's spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham. "Hamburg police couldn't provide clearance for us to leave," Stephanie Grisham said. Mrs. Trump was supposed to join other the spouses on a river cruise and tour a climate change center, media reports said. She tweeted her concern for those hurt in the protests and dispersals. Prior to Friday's violent protests, police prevented small groups of anti-capitalist protestors from disrupting a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump and Putin met for over two hours on Friday afternoon and discussed Russia's alleged interference in the US elections last year and then agreed on stopping violence in Syria. Disagreement however broke out between US and Russian officials on what the two leaders discussed with regard Russia's alleged meddling in the US polls in November last year, an issue that has hounded the Trump administration and resulted in several investigations. Russia, according to US intelligence reports, released confidential info that harmed the campaign of then Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton to prevent her from winning. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Trump accepted Putin's assurances that Russia did not interfere in the elections, which Secretary of State Rex Tillerson denied. Both Lavrov and Tillerson attended the meeting between Trump and Putin. Tillerson said Trump opened the meeting by expressing the "American people's concern regarding Russia's interference in the elections last year." In an off-camera briefing after the meeting, Tillerson said, "they had a very robust and lengthy exchange on the subject. The President pressed President Putin on more than one occasion regarding Russian involvement. President Putin denied such involvement, as I think he has in the past." But Lavrov said in a separate briefing that Trump accepted Putin's assurances. According to a CNN translation, Lavrov said, "President Trump said he's heard Putin's very clear statements that this is not true and that the Russian government didn't interfere in the elections and that he accepts these statements. That's all." Tillerson maintained that Trump's concern over Russian alleged interferece in the 2016 US elections remains. "I think what the two presidents, I think rightly, focused on is how do we move forward. How do we move forward from here?"
