Australian carrier tells aircraft manufacturers to build plane that can do the trip

  Australian airline Qantas wants to achieve something that no other carrier has done before. No, it's not something to do with space travel. Qantas wants to fly from the cities of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane in Australia to London or New York nonstop and has dared aircraft manufacturers to build a plane – perhaps a Boeing 777X or an Airbus A350 - that can do the trip by the year 2022. Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said on Friday: "This is a last frontier in global aviation. This would be one of the most strategically important aircraft orders in the history of Qantas." Joyce issued the statement as the company reported quarterly financial results. According to CNN, if Boeing or Airbus takes up the challenge, passengers would spend more than 20 hours in the air between the continents and that would be about three to four hours less than the total time for the current journeys. Qantas said a nonstop flight between Sydney and London would take 20 hours and 20 minutes and from Sydney to New York would be 18 hours and 7 minutes. Currently, flights to the US or Britain from Australia require a stop in Asia or the Middle East for refueling. So far, reports said no aircraft has ever been able to connect the biggest Australian cities to London and New York nonstop because strong headwinds have severely limited the number of passengers or cargo a flight can carry in order to pay for the long trip. Qantas said marathon flights would be more appealing to passengers because it would reduce the stress that passengers go through because of airport connection. If ever a Sydney-London trip becomes a reality, it would beat the world record holder for the longest flight – from Auckland, New Zealand to Doha, Qatar - by more than 1,300 nautical miles.
