Doha given 48 hours to comply with demands following a request from the Emir of Kuwait

  DOHA – Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Egypt have given Qatar two more days to comply with demands they had set in order to resolve the diplomatic crisis engulfing the Arab region, according to the Saudi Arabian foreign ministry. The ministry said the request for a 48-hour extension was made by the Emir of Kuwait, Shiekh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah, after he was assured by the Qatari government that it would submit an official response to the demands today. Kuwait is the mediator between Doha and the four countries, which cut diplomatic ties as well as land, sea and air links with Qatar for its alleged support to extremism. The four countries sent Doha a list of demands to end the crisis and gave Qatar 10 days to comply with them, with today (Monday) as deadline. Among the key demands are: closure of Qatar's Al Jazeera news network and its affiliates; stopping the development of a Turkish base in Qatar; reducing diplomatic relations with Iran; cutting ties with extremist groups; stop interfering in the affairs of the four countries; and stop giving Qatari nationality to citizens of the four Arab states. The Qatar News Agency said by the time the four countries had agreed to give Qatar an extension, Qatari officials gave Al Sabah the official response of Doha to the demands. The foreign ministers of the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Egypt will converge in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss about Qatar. Doha earlier rejected the demands and said they violate international human rights conventions and described as "baseless" accusations that Qatar supports terror groups. However, the four countries came up with a terror list that had the names of prominent Qataris and Qatar organizations. In Rome last Saturday, Qatar Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani told reporters: "There is no fear. Qatar is prepared to face whatever consequences." Al Thani aid the demands were made to be rejected. "It's not made to be accepted or not made to be negotiated. The state of Qatar instead of rejecting it as a principle, we are willing to engage in providing the proper condition for further dialogue," Al Thani said. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has urged Qatar and Bahrain to resolve the crisis. He spoke to the Qatari Emir and King of Bahrain last Saturday.
