Ras Al Khaimah zipline rides cancelled after helicopter crash

DUBAI - Rides on the world’s longest zipline in Ras Al Khaimah have been cancelled following a deadly helicopter crash in Jebel Jais mountain. Four people, including a flight paramedic, died on Saturday (December 29) after their helicopter crashed into the side of the mountain in Ras Al Khaimah. Authorities named the victims as South African flight paramedic Mark Roxburgh, pilots Saqr Saeed Mohamed Abdullah Al Yamahi and Hameed Mohamed Obai Al Zaabi and navigator Jasim Abdullah Ali Tunaiji. It is not clear why the crew was in the area at the time of the incident, but an investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. According to reports, the helicopter spun out of control after clipping the zipline on Jebel Jais, but a spokesperson for the RAK Tourism Development Authority said this has not been confirmed. His Highness Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah, has ordered an investigation, according to state news agency WAM. Meanwhile, the Toro Verde zipline in Ras Al Khaimah announced that ziplines rides are “cancelled under further notice”. Toro Verde also said the incident in Jebel Jais mountain has resulted in the closure of two spots in the area. “Jebel Jais Mountain Park and access road have been closed until further notice, in order to give the emergency services the access they need,” Toro Verde said on its Instagram page.
