The UAE is expected to mark the start of Ramadan 2025 on Saturday, March 1, pending confirmation by the country’s official moon-sighting committee. Ramadan, the ninth and holiest month of the Islamic calendar, lasts 29 or 30 days and is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon. If the month begins as predicted, it will conclude either on March 29 or 30, with Eid Al Fitr falling between March 31 and April 2, according to forecasts by the Emirates Astronomical Society. During Ramadan, Muslims worldwide observe fasting from dawn to sunset, refraining from food, drink, and other physical needs as a spiritual practice. The month is also marked by increased charitable activities, Quran recitation, and special prayers known as Taraweeh. In the UAE, government and private sector employees will have their working hours reduced by two hours daily, as mandated by UAE labour laws. This adjustment allows more time for prayer, family gatherings, and community engagement during the holy month. Schools across the country will also implement shorter schedules to accommodate students and staff who are fasting. Educational institutions have been advised to ensure that academic activities remain productive despite the reduced hours. The UAE's hospitality sector is already preparing for the season, with many restaurants and cafes adjusting their operating hours. In recent years, rules regarding food service during fasting hours have been relaxed, particularly in Dubai, allowing restaurants to remain open without the need for physical partitions. As Ramadan approaches, the UAE’s Moonsighting Committee will convene after sunset on the 29th day of Shaban to observe the crescent moon. If the moon is visible, Ramadan will commence the following day; if not, Shaban will extend to 30 days, and Ramadan will start the next day. “Ramadan is a special time for everyone here, whether you’re fasting or not,” Dubai resident Mariam K. told Expat Media. “It’s a month of unity, giving, and kindness.” Authorities have reminded the public to stay informed through official announcements regarding the exact start date of Ramadan and the corresponding changes in work and school schedules.
