When is Ramadan expected to start?

  DUBAI – With Ramadan just around the corner, astronomers are predicting the exact date of moon sighting to signal the start of the holy month. According to astronomers, the first day of Ramadan is likely to fall on May 6. The exact start of Ramadan, however, will still need to be officially announced by a moon-sighting committee. Ibrahim Al Jarwan, Astronomy and Metrology Researcher, said in a previous interview that the new moon will be formed at 2:46am on May 5 and disappear 30 minutes after sunset. Al Jarwan said that the new moon of Ramadan will then be possibly sighted on May 6 “as per the astronomical standards of moon sighting.”

Meanwhile, UAE residents who will be fasting during Ramadan are expected to experience the shortest fasting period in four years. The fasting period for Ramadan this time is less than 15 hours a day, according to Emirati astronomer Thabet Al Qaissieh of Al Sadeem Observatory in Al Wathba. The shortest fasting period is expected in 2030, when Ramadan is predicted to start on December 25 and end on January 23, making the fasting period a little over 10 hours and 30 minutes.
