Ramadan: 25 beggars arrested during first 5 days

The General Department of Criminal Investigations, working with the Dubai Police stations, has detained 25 beggars as part of its effective anti-begging program under the slogan "Begging is a Wrong Concept of Compassion." During the first five days of the holy month, from March 23 to 27, 12 men and 13 women were imprisoned. According to Major General Jamal Salem Al Jallaf, Director of the General Department of Criminal Investigation, the anti-begging campaign has dramatically decreased the number of beggars annually because of the rigorous and stern measures implemented against those detained. Begging, according to Al Jallaf, poses a risk to people's safety, security, and the safety of their homes and other assets. He outlined the major negative effects of begging, including theft and robbery, and using young children and the sick for nefarious purposes. Colonel Ali Salem, Director of the Infiltration Control Department in the General Department of Criminal Investigation, urged the public to report any beggars right away by calling the call center (901) or using the "Police Eye" service available on the Dubai Police smart app rather than giving in to their plight or showing sympathy for their appearance. Additionally, he cautioned not to fall for email and social media scams from beggars. He recommended the general public disregard such messages and report them through the e-Crime portal at www.ecrime.ae. KD/Expat Media
