Ramadan start date announced, more than 13 hour fasting expected, says expert

DUBAI  - Ramadan is expected to start on May 17, with fasting hours expected to take more than 13 hours a day, said the deputy director general of Sharjah Centre for Astronomy and Space Sciences (SCASS). "The new moon of the Holy Month of Ramadan is to be 'born' on Tuesday, May 15 around 3.48 pm UAE time, and disappears two minutes before sunset of the same evening," said Ibrahim Al Jarwan of SCASS. The new moon will not be visible after sunset in the UAE but will remain visible for one hour and 16 minutes at sunset, he said. The new moon will also be visible after sunset on May 16, he said. "As such, Thursday, May 17, shall be the first day of Ramadan as per the astronomical calculations," he said. The deputy director general said that the fasting period will last 13 hours and 25 minutes at the beginning of Ramadan. Fasting hours shall then increase to 13 hours and 42 minutes, and will reach up to 15 hours by the end of the month. The new moon of the lunar month of Shawwal that follows Ramadan is expected to appear on June 13 at around 11:43pm in the UAE, he said. The moon will be monitored after sunset on June 14 and can "be definitely seen on Friday, June 15, and that will be the first day of Eid Al Fitr as per the astronomical calculations."
