Rare heart tumour removed from Abu Dhabi woman

  ABU DHABI - A rare heart tumour the size of a tennis ball has been removed from a 61-year-old woman in Abu Dhabi. Somalian woman Safia Farah Jama was given a new lease in life after doctors at Burjeel Hospital successfully removed the tumour that was affecting her heart's blood flow. Professor Dr Walid Shaker, consultant and head of department for cardiac surgery at Burjeel Hospital, described the surgery as "very complicated" as the tumour was attached to the mitral valve. "We completed the surgery successfully and removed the tumour. She was discharged five days later and has seen a remarkable change in her health since," Dr Shaker said. The surgery was done for free in line with the UAE's Year of Giving initiative. "This was like an answer to our prayers. Burjeel Hospital gave me a second life. Our family will forever be grateful," Jama said.
