Housemaid killed in Dubai gas cylinder blast caused by a rat

  DUBAI – A housemaid was killed in a gas cylinder explosion at a villa in Dubai and the Dubai Police said the culprit was a rat. Police said that the vermin had nibbled on the gas cylinder tube in the kitchen, causing a leak that later fuelled a big explosion. Captain Mohammed Ali Al Qasim, Dubai Police’s chief of the criminal engineering department, said the villa owner had smelled the gas leak and warned his housemaids against using the stove in the kitchen. However, one of the housemaids ignited one of the burners, causing an explosion that damaged the kitchen’s walls and causing it to collapse into her colleague’s room. The maid was instantly killed by the collapsed wall, while the other maid sustained moderate burns from the blast. Al Qasim said this was not the first time rats have caused a gas leak. A similar incident was reported in Al Twar area, although there were no fatalities reported.
