When Rechel Hoco steps onto the grand stage of Miss Universe Philippines 2025 on May 2 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena, she’ll be carrying more than the pride of her hometown, Oriental Mindoro — she’ll be wearing the dreams of every Filipino overseas worker who found hope far from home. Rechel, known to her 1.7 million followers as “Rechel in Dubai,” is one of 66 official candidates vying for the coveted crown. But her road to the pageant didn’t start with tiaras and glitz — it started with grit and a passport stamped with ambition. “I pay tribute to the city that became more than a land of opportunity — it became a new beginning,” Rechel shared in a heartfelt statement. “The city that gave birth to ‘Rechel in Dubai’; a home that embraced not only my dreams as an OFW but also the hopes of thousands of Filipinos like me.”

A Dubai story worth telling

Her journey in Dubai began in 2022, when she left the Philippines to join her brother and look for work. Like many Filipinos, she started modestly — working as restaurant staff and later as a travel and tourism sales agent. But what set her apart was her storytelling spirit. Through vlogs capturing her raw experiences as an overseas Filipino worker (OFW), Rechel quickly became a relatable digital voice in the UAE expat community. Today, she juggles life as a content creator and beauty queen hopeful, with brand endorsements, travel schedules, and a growing platform that gives voice to modern-day Filipinas abroad. She is also a brand ambassador for Pinnacle Tourism in the UAE, appearing in an ad that was recently featured in Expat Media’s Special Edition magazine. During the pageant’s preliminary round, Rechel honored the cultural melting pot that is Dubai. One of her standout looks was a shimmering blue sequined evening gown — “inspired by the elegance of the traditional Abaya, Indian saree, and the diverse nationalities that call Dubai home.” In the National Costume segment, Rechel transformed into a fierce and mythical “mambabarang,” a powerful sorceress from Philippine folklore. Designed by the renowned Axel Que, the costume featured striking black and red wings and a dramatic headdress, blending fantasy and cultural homage. At a pre-pageant photoshoot, she donned a sleek black satin dress with a giant ribbon by Aaronic Atelier Dubai, another nod to the emirate that shaped her new life.

A pageant veteran with purpose

Though this is her most high-profile competition yet, Rechel is no stranger to the stage. “At the age of 13, I experienced selling corn, working with catering services, and joining local pageants to support my family and my education,” she shared. Her humble beginnings are the bedrock of her perseverance. “The 168 pageants I joined have not only given me crowns but have been instrumental to who I am today,” she added. With every sash and every speech, Rechel aims to uplift others. “My goal is to inspire. From fighting poverty to finding fortune in another country as an OFW, I always make myself relevant to my crown using vlogging as a platform,” she said. “Now that I have the opportunity to influence my crowd, I am ready to wear, in my head, in my heart, the Miss Universe Philippines crown.” Rechel’s story is not just about beauty — it’s about resilience, transformation, and using her platform to represent the modern Filipina. As she continues her journey toward the crown, she stands not only as a candidate, but as a symbol of what OFWs can achieve with heart, hustle, and a home like Dubai behind them.
