Most decorated Olympian says he has no plans to return to competitive swimming

  CHICAGO - Former competitive swimmer Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian of all time, is sticking to his decision to retire and not go back to the sport that gave him 28 medals. "I'm happy. I think four years ago, I wasn't. I think being able to come back and being able to finish how I did and being able to get back to where I wanted to get to — for me, at this point in my life and in my career, that's all I can ask for. Right?" Phelps told The Associated Press in Chicago. Phelps said it is time for him to move on and he wanted to pursue other goals in life outside of swimming. It's not the end of my swimming career, it's the start of something else. I'll always be around the pool. I'll always be around the sport. I'm ready to move on. Sometimes, it just happens." After competing in the 2012 Olympics in London, Phelps announced his retirement from the sport saying "I just wanted to be done with swimming and didn't want anything to do with the sport anymore." but he returned to professional swimming in 2014. Phelps was dropped from the US team for the world aquatics championship for a DIU (driving under influence) and competed in the US national championships. He competed in the trials for the 2016 games and earned a slot in the swimming team for the Rio Olympics. Meanwhile, Phelps and fellow Olympians Allison Schmitt and Grant Hackett met with the Special Olympics Chicago Aquatics team and children from the Boys & Girls Club of Chicago. They also took part in a relay race with the Special Olympians. During the event, Phelps announced a partnership between his foundation and the Consumer Product Safety Commission to promote pool safety.
