A new desert escape is taking shape in Dubai, promising open-air movies under the stars, lakeside walks, caravan camping and family-friendly attractions:— all set against the calm backdrop of the emirate’s natural landscape. Al Layan Oasis, spanning one million square metres, is designed as a large-scale environmental and recreational destination located about 50 minutes from Dubai’s city centre. The project is expected to welcome up to 330,000 visitors annually. At the heart of the oasis will be a lake covering more than 250,000 square meters, offering sweeping desert views and shaded areas for relaxation.

Walk, cycle and explore

For residents who enjoy outdoor activities, the oasis will feature 14 kilometres of walking and cycling tracks. Around 4 kilometres of these will be elevated five metres above ground, giving visitors panoramic views of the surrounding desert and connecting to existing routes in Al Marmoom. The development will include 1,000 parking spaces, making it accessible for families planning day trips or weekend outings. Native plants and shaded areas will be expanded across the site to enhance comfort and preserve the natural character of the desert.

Four zones, different experiences

Al Layan Oasis will be divided into four main zones, each offering a different experience. The Gathering Oasis will serve as a social and cultural hub. Visitors can expect an open-air cinema, an amphitheatre for performances, food truck areas and event spaces designed for community activities. The Family Oasis will provide 28 rest areas, children’s play zones and integrated amenities tailored for parents and young visitors. For adventure seekers and outdoor enthusiasts, the Camping Oasis will include dedicated spaces for up to 100 caravans. A visitor centre will also promote environmental awareness and education. Meanwhile, the Recreation Oasis will offer activities, retail outlets and services within a sustainable desert setting. Al Layan Oasis forms part of Dubai Municipality’s Blue and Green Roadmap 2030, a wider programme supporting environmental sustainability and quality of life. Projects under the roadmap are valued at more than Dh4 billion. Marwan Ahmed bin Ghalita, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, said the project highlights Dubai’s approach to developing natural destinations while keeping people at the centre of planning. “Al Layan Oasis reflects Dubai’s vision of investing in nature as a core part of wellbeing and quality of life,” he said. “In every project, we place people, families, and communities at the centre of urban development.” Bader Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said the oasis has been designed to improve how visitors experience the desert environment through high-quality facilities and advanced infrastructure.

Part of a bigger vision

The project complements the Dubai Countryside and Rural Areas Development Plan and supports the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. Authorities said approximately 365,000 square metres within the oasis will be allocated for investment opportunities, supporting partnerships with the private sector and enhancing visitor services. When completed, Al Layan Oasis is expected to become a key stop along Dubai’s caravan route; offering a quieter alternative to city life while blending recreation, culture and nature in one destination.
