Are olive products really good for your baby? Our baby expert tries DermoViva Baby hair and skin care products

  “We’ve got some baby products in the mail. Can you and Bea review them?” my editor said, referring to my 1-year-old baby. I have to admit I have never heard of DermoViva Baby before, but the packaging aptly called “bundle of joy” gave a good first impression. The DermoViva Baby gift set. PHOTO BY EXPAT MEDIA The box came with 200ml bottles of massage oil, shampoo and moisturizing lotion plus a 100ml tube of soft cream. All of them with the word “olive” coined in the name. “No paraffins. No parabens. No sulphates. No phthalates,” said the label. In other words, no harmful chemicals. But what I found more interesting was the fact that the baby products were created with olive extracts. I love olives, particularly in my food, but in hair and skin care products for babies? That can’t be bad! And so started the little adventure for Bea and I. Here’s our report card: Smell: I just love mild scent of this product line, from the massage oil down to the soft cream. There’s a lovely hint of aloe vera and olive oil in the massage oil, soft cream and moisturizing lotion. Overall the scent is easy on the nose—even the hint of citrus in the shampoo—and I can tell that a lot of thought went into creating the scent so that it doesn’t overpower the baby’s olfactory senses. Feel: I don’t like greasy lotion and cream and I can imagine that my baby doesn’t either, so the DermoViva soft cream and moisturizing lotion really impressed me. They were lovely to use and easy to apply on my baby’s skin (and mine, I have to admit!) and our skin felt silky, not sticky or greasy afterwards. Consistency: The massage oil has the consistency of water, but has the effect of virgin olive oil. And I love how it doesn’t feel greasy on our skin (when most massage oils give you that heavy, oily feeling). Here’s an idea: I think I should bring this with me the next time I go for a massage. Look: The shampoo is “tear free” which means I don’t have to worry if during one clumsy moment I happen to get shampoo suds on my baby’s eye. But I didn’t have to worry about that either since it doesn't form a lot of bubbles when I lathered it on my baby's hair. It was easy to rinse off too. Best part? Her hair felt and smelt clean afterwards. Verdict: The products certainly give the word “baby fresh” a whole new meaning.
