Love tea? This Dubai haven is for you
DUBAI – It’s easy to miss the t-Lounge by Dilmah in Dubai’s Ibn Battuta Mall. The teashop and café is located along the Egypt court’s “road less travelled”, sandwiched between retail shops. “First time customers do have a hard time finding us,” restaurant manager Deepak said when my companion and I told him we almost missed the place. A short while later, a couple and their daughter walked inside, giving him a handshake before settling down in one of the colourful, cushioned chairs. “They’re one of our regulars,” he said, smiling. I can see how people would want to come back here. The chic café has a modern and relaxing lounge vibe where you can enjoy and appreciate fine tea, as well as tea-inspired food and beverages. Of course, fine tea comes with a price so expect upwards of Dh50 for a glass of designer concoction.
To start off, I had a pot of sancha with lemon grass and peppermint, which was served with a miniature hourglass so we would know how long we wanted to keep the loose tea in the hot water. The teapot had a slight chip in the snout, but as soon as we flagged it, the crew quickly replaced the entire pot. The tea, though, was perfect. The fragrant infusion was mild yet refreshing, with the lemon grass herb and the steamed green tea giving off a subtle citrus flavour with a minty note.
Not much of a hot beverage lover, my companion opted for a cinnamon ice cream t-shake, which she finished off before the staff could even serve our sandwiches. “That was surprisingly good and just the perfect level of sweet. I didn’t even have to ask them to put more ice in it,” she said with a grin.
We leafed through the inventive menu, taking note of the surprisingly diverse list: a range of signature teas, designer leaf tea, ice tea, sparkling tea, mocktails, shakes and smoothies. There was also food to match: salads, wraps, burgers, pizzas, crepes, waffles, and tea-inspired desserts such as ice cream and cakes.
On Deepak's suggestion, we tried their popular t-Kitsch. The cinnamon version of the milk tea was heavenly! The strong, brewed Ceylon tea blended perfectly with the right amount of condensed milk, infused with cinnamon to give us that frothy and delicious goodness in a glass.
To cap off the afternoon tea, we tried their cool delights: vanilla t-ice cream and the strawberry tea sorbet. Inventive, delicious and just the right amount of sweet for a pair of sweet tooth!
Verdict: You don’t have to be a tea connoisseur to love this place. You can let your appreciation brew overtime.
