  THE popular Tirta Spa on the shores of Boracay, Philippines recently opened its first branch in the Middle East and we were one of the first to try whether it was able to successfully export its award winning brand of wellness here. The newly opened women's spa is housed in a two-storey villa in Jumeirah 3, along Jumeirah Beach Road in Dubai. Even before my massage buddy and I reached the door, the receptionist had already opened it, welcoming us with a smile. "I could see you coming on CCTV," she said. We were led to their reception area, a beautifully designed room that featured a fusion of Arabic and Philippine-inspired furniture and decor. The ambiance was instantly relaxing. What to try Although Tirta Spa Dubai offers a range of Oriental massages, we couldn't miss the spa's signature massage called "hilot", a version of the ancient Filipino art of healing. The underrated hilot definitely deserves to be put on the map for its therapeutic benefits. In hilot, strokes are more direct; focusing on healing the body's problematic areas. Tirta Spa Dubai's version starts with a foot bath and a gentle foot massage that's going to leave you wanting to sink into the sofa. Then it is off to the massage bed where the therapist lets you know that the session is about to start by dimming the lights and sounding a small gong three times to dispel any negative energy. The reverberating sound surprisingly has a calming effect. True to a traditional hilot, the session was tailored to my healing needs, with the therapist expertly kneading the sore muscles of my upper back area and checking whether the pressure she applied was tolerable. In the Philippines, people use hilot to seek relief from pain and other discomfort. But unlike hilot, Tirta Spa Dubai's massage wasn't painful at all. Surprisingly, it was very relaxing. The best part? It was just as effective. I walked out of there without feeling any kind of soreness after my 100-minute treatment. What to do After a massage, don't miss some me-time at the nail salon on the second floor, which features purple lounge chairs so you can completely relax (and maybe have a snooze) while your hands and feet get a lot of TLC. From the soft-spoken and smiling staff members, the sarongs (a one-piece clothing used in Asia) we used before getting a massage, the relaxing interior decor, and most of all, the professional service.
