In a concert that was equal parts thrilling and emotional, OPM icon Rico Blanco captivated fans anew at the Pinoy Beats concert in Dubai on Sunday (November 3). For music lovers in Dubai, witnessing Rico live was a rare opportunity to experience a legend in action. Rico brought his signature energy and musical prowess to the stage, turning The Agenda into an unforgettable celebration of Original Pilipino Music (OPM). “Still has it” was the unanimous sentiment from fans who were swept away by his intense performance, as he delivered hit after hit with the passion that has defined his four-decade career. Dubai holds a special place in Rico’s heart, a sentiment he shared with fans during the concert. “Dubai is one of my favorite places to play. And that’s because of you guys. You give me so much love and warmth all the time,” he told the audience. Rico delivered a nostalgic and powerful performance, reminding fans why his music has been a staple for generations. For many, it was a night to remember, filled with sing-alongs and dance-worthy hits, from Antukin to his timeless Your Universe. Rico’s Dubai setlist was a fan’s dream, opening with the raw energy of Antukin and moving seamlessly into hits like Sayong-Sayo, and a medley of his Rivermaya classics, including Liwang sa Dilim, Hinahanap-hanap Kita, and Kisapmata. The audience roared along, their excitement matching Rico’s as he jumped, shuffled, and danced across the stage. In an earlier Q&A with Expat Media, Rico spoke of his admiration for working with younger artists, calling his co-artists at Pinoy Beats Juan Karlos and Kyle Echarri exceptionally talented and driven. “It’s refreshing to be able to share a stage with them and witness their energy,” he said, highlighting the magic that happens when seasoned artists collaborate with emerging stars. Rico’s journey began in the ‘90s as Rivermaya’s lead vocalist, keyboardist, and primary songwriter. His tenure with the band produced timeless hits like 214, Himala, Kisapmata, and You’ll Be Safe Here. After 14 years with the band, he pursued a solo career, marking a new chapter with his iconic song Yugto, which won awards and topped charts. He later diversified his career, founding Balcony Entertainment, exploring acting, and even releasing a clothing line. Rico’s journey took him on various paths, but music remained his passion. His solo debut album, Your Universe, gained international attention with songs like Neon Lights, which topped charts in Singapore and Hong Kong. Reflecting on his journey and how music has connected him to fans around the world, he said, “You accompany me in life, in all the good things and the not-so-good things that happened in my life.” He closed the concert with You’ll Be Safe Here, a song that feels like an anthem of comfort, especially for overseas Filipinos. As he wrapped up the night, fans couldn’t help but feel that they had witnessed something extraordinary. Four decades into his career, Rico continues to inspire, reminding us all of the enduring power of music to connect people across miles and generations.
