How to ride your e-scooter in Dubai without breaking the law

The Dubai Police issued a new reminder to e-scooter riders on road rules after a spate of accidents were reported in Dubai. Ten serious accidents involving e-scooter riders in Dubai were recorded between January and June this year. Last year, two e-scooter riders died in separate accidents after being hit by vehicles. In a new safety campaign, Dubai Police reminded e-scooter riders to use their vehicle only on designated paths and zones. Riders must also wear protective gear that includes a helmet, knee pads, and reflective clothing. “Bicycles and e-scooters must be parked at designated places and should not be left randomly in a manner that can cause traffic congestion and risks to other road users,” said Colonel Juma bin Suwaidan, acting head of Dubai Police's traffic department. Riders must maintain a safe distance between their vehicles and others’ vehicles. They must avoid holding or carrying heavy items while riding, or have a passenger. In a previous interview, police said e-scooter riders or cyclists may stay on the far right-hand side of the road or sidewalks and pavements in case there are no designated e-scooter zones. Stunts that are dangerous or compromising to riders, pedestrians or any other road user must be completely avoided. E-scooter riders are also prohibited from holding on to moving vehicles. Bicycle and e-scooter riders must give priority to pedestrians and slow down at intersections and crossroads, while keeping a safe distance between themselves, vehicles and pedestrians. In Dubai, strict laws on bicycle and e-scooter use are in place, with riders required to apply for an e-scooter permit in order to legally drive the vehicle in designated areas.
