A survey done by RoadSafetyUAE, QIC Insured and Gargash Insurance Brokers showed that a majority of 1,835 road accidents recorded during the Ramadan last year happened between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. and that the Wednesday was most dangerous day to drive and Sunday was the safest.
The same survey also showed that 39 percent of those involved in the accidents were Indians followed by Pakistanis (15 percent), Emiratis (11 percent), Egyptians (seven percent), Jordanians (four percent) and other nationalities (24 percent). Eight-two percent of those involved in the accidents were male drivers while 18 percent were female motorists.
The age demographics revealed that 31 percent of those involved in accidents in Ramadan last year were aged 40 years old and above while eight percent were between the ages 18 and 24.
Frederik Bisbjerg, executive vice president of Qatar Insured, said, "as always, and even more so during Ramadan, drivers should be very attentive to their environment and drive with a mindset of others being illogical, in the sense that you should expect unexpected lane changes and abrupt braking."
"We cannot say if the accidents were caused by drivers being tired as they rarely state this as a cause for the accident. The main cause of accidents are distracted driving, primarily by drivers being on their phones," Bisbjerg also said.
On the other hand, Thomas Edelmann, managing director of Road Safety UAE, said motorists should be aware of their own limits, always use a seatbelt while driving, and drive defensively.
Gargash Insurance managing director Mustafa Oliyath Vazayil, for his part, advised motorists to leave early to go to a Ramadan event. "Motorists must realise that even if they arrive late, people will understand."
Other road safety tips offered by the three insurance executives are:
*Approach intersections or junctions carefully at Iftar time-even when the light is green.
*Avoid beating the red light.
*Maintain a safe distance between your vehicle and the one in front and behind you.
*Avoid tailgating.
*Exercise extra caution while driving at sunset, prior to Iftar.
*Use headlights when driving at dawn, also before Iftar.
*If possible, stay out of the road during nighttime.
*Get enough sleep and pull over if you feel drowsy.
*Use public transport in going to and coming from a Ramadan event.
