Irish golf champion Rory McIlroy has hinted that he would embrace honorary UAE citizenship if the opportunity were presented. After sealing his latest triumph at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai, McIlroy spoke about his enduring connection with the UAE and its pivotal role in his career. “I have never been offered , but if I were to be offered, I probably would take it, yeah,” McIlroy said during the post-tournament press conference. “I lived here for four years. I was a resident. I love this part of the world.” McIlroy has enjoyed remarkable success in the UAE, winning seven titles, including four Hero Dubai Desert Classic trophies and three DP World Tour Championships. His victory on Sunday (November 17), which saw him equal Jon Rahm’s record at Jumeirah Golf Estates, was a fitting end to a season of highs and near misses. The 35-year-old first competed in the UAE as an amateur in 2006, receiving an invitation to the Dubai Desert Classic—a tournament he has returned to every year since. “It’s been 18 pretty cool years,” he reflected. “There have been a lot of fond memories along the way, and as long as this region continues to be an important part of the world of golf, I’ll keep coming back.” McIlroy’s connection to Dubai runs deeper than his professional achievements. He lived in the emirate for four years and has often described it as his "home away from home," building lasting friendships and cherishing the culture. When asked about the prospect of UAE citizenship, McIlroy’s admiration for the country shone through. “I love coming back here. I have a lot of friends, and I try to make it a point to come back as much as I can,” he said. ICA/Expat Media
