RT is dropped by fellow TV providers and tech companies

RT, a Russian-backed media outlet, is slowly turning into a social pariah with the social media and tech companies and TV providers blocking its reach. The media outlet was famous for its promotion of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s talking points, particularly his narratives for the unprovoked attack on Ukraine. TikTok as well as Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, separately announced on Monday several extreme measures against RT, including blocking the outlet in Europe, disabling its accessibility and services to users, and later removing RT’s eligibility of content monetization. Google also announced on Sunday the disabling of RT’s ad revenue earnings on its platforms particularly Youtube, which is used as a key platform for the amplified content reach of RT. Aside from social media companies, cable carriers across the world including the two largest Canadian television providers, Rogers Communications and Bell Canada have made the decision to remove the channel from their lineups. In their press release, Ukrainian media conglomerate 1+1 Media Group has written a joint letter of request to fellow media companies to remove Russian news channels from their services. The request has been granted by the local providers from Poland, Australia, Slovakia, the Cech Republic, Canada, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Germany as they “turned the propagandistic TV channels off their satellites, cable networks, and across other platforms and sources.” Ofcom, the UK media regulator observed an increase in the number of programs on the RT services that warranted 15 new investigations under their Broadcasting Code. RT, however, continues to be broadcast in DirecTV and DISH broadcast in the US. A DISH spokesperson commented in a CNN interview that their thoughts are with the people of Ukraine, especially their team members in the country and that they are closely monitoring the situation. Several RT staffers have publicly quitted the network which further adds to the blow of the outlet. Both the DirecTV spokesperson and the RT spokesperson did not respond to CNN’s request to comment.
