The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai is building 19 truck rest facilities and lay-bys across numerous areas to improve the safety and wellbeing of drivers and offer them shelter from the searing summer heat. The truck rest stops and lay-bys have a combined size of more than 300,000 square meters and can hold more than 1,000 trucks and heavy vehicles. The RTA will build 16 truck rest stops throughout Dubai in six key locations and routes that draw a lot of trucks every day, including Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai-Hatta Road, Dubai-Al Ain Road, Jebel Ali - Lehbab Road, and Al Aweer Road. The truck rest stops have service areas, prayer rooms, diesel refueling stations, dining establishments, repair shops, and driver rest spaces. They can hold up to 40 vehicles. Three integrated truck lay-bys are part of the project: one in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), and two with Almutakamela Vehicle Testing and Registration. The truck lay-bys will have diesel refueling stations, lodging facilities, maintenance shops, dining establishments, office buildings, prayer rooms, driving schools, clinics, pharmacies, exchange shops, laundries, and other facilities and support services. They are located near the Jebel Ali Free Zone and Al Maktoum International Airport, next to the entrance of Dubai Industrial City, and next to the Al Tayy Racetrack, close to Emirates Road.
