RTA to launch safety drive for delivery drivers

Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Police announced a safety drive campaign for delivery drivers as motorbike-related accidents spiked by 25% last year. According to Dubai officials, 400 accidents were reported in 2021, rising from 300 cases in 2020. The major causes of the accidents included failure to leave a safe distance, abrupt swerving, and running a red light signal. Following the road accident reports, RTA and Dubai Police announced their joint campaign to educate delivery drivers about the risks of speeding and substandard driving practices. RTA Director-General Mattar Al Tayer says that "The Covid-19 pandemic resulted in a surge of demand for delivery service companies to meet the public needs of goods and products, which dictated the need to regulate the business of this sector to ensure delivering quality services to customers.” The program aims to improve safety inspections on delivery drivers to verify that they are following traffic laws. Both agencies agreed to introduce protective gear requirements for motorcycle riders, such as elbow protectors, helmets, and safety shoes that meet international standards. In collaboration with training institutes, motorcycle training materials are in the process of completion. The best-performing companies and drivers will receive the Delivery Service Excellence award. The awards aim to foster a competitive setting among delivery firms to help them to encourage their drivers to follow traffic restrictions and provide excellent customer care. BKM/ Expat Media
