Hundreds of workers not paid for months at Dubai company that built Apple headquarters' space-age roof
DUBAI - Hundreds of employees of a construction supply company in Dubai are in limbo after the company failed to pay their salaries for months, according to a news report.
Employees of Premier Composite Technologies (PCT) based in Dubai Investments Park said they are struggling to make ends meet and that the company owed them salaries of more than Dh20,000.
The company supplied materials for Apple's space-age roof at its new flagship headquarters in California and the solar-powered doors on Apple's Dubai Mall store.
Staff said there was yet no email from PCT explaining the delay in payment of wages. PCT was also unavailable for comment.
In January, the company was hit by a cashflow crisis, with managing director Hannes Waimer assuring staff in an email that they would be offered Dh200 as food allowance during the period. Waimer blamed the company's cash crisis on unpaid contracts in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, a PCT employee told The National that the situation has forced him to send his family home.
“We’ve not had an email to explain what the delay is, or when we will be paid. There are more than 1,400 people in the same position as me,” said SD, who said he is owed about Dh35,000.
“I’m getting calls from banks asking for money. I have asked the HR department to help but they don’t know when the cash flow issues will be resolved,” he said.
Another employee said the company owed him more than Dh40,000 but he still finds himself "working for free" for fear that he may not be able to claim the salary that he is owed if he leaves now.
“I don’t know how long we can manage for, many of us are looking for new jobs but it is not easy,” he said.
