Thousands of millennials download 'honesty' app Sarahah

  RIYADH - There is an app made by Saudi techie that has taken the Internet by storm because it aims to promote "ruthless honesty". The anonymous messaging tool made by 29-year-old Saudi programmer Zainalabdin Tawfiq is called Sarahah (Arabic for honesty) and it has topped lists of downloadable apps. So far, Sarahah has 85 million registered users and the app made it to the top of the Apple app store in some countries, ahead of Snapchat and Instagram. Tawfiq told the Agence France Presse (AFP) that he conceived Sarahah as "a tool for soliciting bluntly frank workplace feedback". But AFP said while the tool "has found its way into the smartphones of millennials worldwide, critics have raised alarm about trolling and privacy issues". Tawfiq told AFP: Sarahah is the digital equivalent of an old-school suggestion box. Feedback is the goal — anonymous feedback." Tawfiq also said Sarahah is made on the premise that stripping users of their identity "promotes ruthless honesty". Sarahah prods users to "leave a constructive message :)". The recipient however is not allowed to reply but only share it on social media or block the sender. AFP said Sarahah's mass appeal "stems from the appetite in the Arab world — notorious for online censorship — for unfiltered platforms for expression, although Tawfiq said it has also gained a strong popularity in Western countries." Because the app knocks down social barriers that obstruct free speech, one user described it as an app where you can "hit enter on comments you would have otherwise backspaced". Meanwhile, Nawaf Alsahhaf, chief executive of Badir, a Saudi Arabian government-backed technology incubator that helped Tawfiq told AFP that the success of Sarahah "really proves that Saudi startups can achieve spectacular gains when properly supported."
