Saudi Arabia has rolled out sweeping new regulations that reshape how residents, influencers, and visitors can use social media in the country. The guidelines, announced by the General Authority for Media Regulation, outline clear restrictions on what people can post, share, and portray online—part of a broader push to align digital behavior with cultural values and protect privacy. The rules, which apply to everyone in Saudi Arabia regardless of nationality, set strict boundaries across several areas of online content. Here’s a breakdown of the new do’s and don’ts that every user should know:

1. No bullying, ridicule, or mockery

Posts that insult or make fun of individuals or groups are strictly banned. This includes memes, comments, or videos that demean others, as authorities move to curb online bullying and harassment.

2. No sharing of private family matters

Content that exposes family disputes, private conversations, or sensitive details about personal lives can no longer be published. The rule is aimed at protecting privacy and discouraging the airing of household issues for public entertainment.

3. No featuring children or domestic workers in lifestyle content

Even seemingly positive portrayals are off-limits. Lifestyle videos, family vlogs, or influencer posts that include children or domestic staff are prohibited, to prevent exploitation and protect vulnerable groups.

4. No flaunting of wealth

Posting about luxury cars, wads of cash, extravagant properties, or other signs of personal wealth is explicitly banned. The move is meant to discourage vanity-driven content and reduce the influence of showy displays of money on younger audiences.

5. No misinformation or false claims

Content that spreads rumors, unverified claims, or misleading information is restricted. Creators are expected to ensure their posts are accurate, especially when it comes to news, health, or safety.

6. No obscene or offensive language

Profanity, indecent expressions, and content considered vulgar or obscene are barred. This applies not just to words, but also to visuals and audio that cross the Kingdom’s standards of public decency.

7. No boasting about tribal or regional pride

Posts that emphasize superiority based on tribal, familial, or regional identity are restricted, with authorities stressing the importance of unity and social cohesion.

8. No indecent or revealing clothing

Outfits that expose the body from the shoulders to the legs, overly tight clothing, or sheer fabrics are prohibited in online content. The rules reinforce Saudi Arabia’s emphasis on modesty in public appearance.

Penalties and enforcement

Authorities have warned that violations will result in strict penalties, though the exact fines and sanctions have not yet been detailed. Enforcement is expected to range from content takedowns and account suspensions to financial penalties or legal action, depending on the severity of the violation. The new regulations reflect Saudi Arabia’s determination to control its fast-growing digital environment, where influencers and content creators have gained significant cultural influence.
