German authorities are investigating a car-ramming attack at a Christmas market in Magdeburg that killed five people and injured 41. The victims of the attack include a nine-year-old boy and four women aged between 45 and 75. The suspect, 50-year-old Saudi doctor Taleb Al Abdulmohsen, has been detained. Al Abdulmohsen, a psychiatrist, had lived in Germany for nearly two decades. Initially known for helping Gulf citizens escape oppressive regimes, he later expressed extremist views online, supporting far-right ideologies and criticising Germany’s immigration policies. Authorities are now examining his social media posts, which include threats against Germany and its people. Saudi officials had previously flagged his activities, but a 2023 risk assessment deemed him no specific threat. The Christmas market has been shut down for the season as the investigation unfolds. The attack has reignited debates over security and immigration ahead of Germany’s February elections.

What we know about the suspect

Al Abdulmohsen, a psychiatrist, moved to Germany in 2006 and later became an outspoken critic of Islam and Germany’s immigration policies. He ran a platform advising individuals escaping Gulf regimes. Authorities have linked his social media posts to anti-Islamic and far-right ideologies, including support for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.
