Scam busted: No Dh4,000 from UAE labour authority

  DUBAI – A new scam claiming to offer Dh4,000 compensation from the UAE Ministry of Labour is targeting victims unsuspectingly directed to a fake website. The scam message has been widely circulated on Whatsapp and social networking websites, claiming that: “The workers who worked between the 1990 and 2021, have the right to receive the benefit of Dh4000 by Ministry of Labour UAE. Check if your name is in the list of the people who have the rights to withdraw this benefits .” The message, which directs users to a different website,  contains grammatical errors and wrongly refers to the UAE Ministry of Labour. The official name of the UAE’s labour ministry is the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). MOHRE has yet to issue a statement on the matter, but the ministry has not made any announcement about compensation for workers. Its role is proposing federal laws to regulate labour affairs in the UAE and managing the local job market. This is not the first time that cyber criminals have targeted UAE residents by using a fake page or scam messages. Authorities have repeatedly warned residents not to respond to the message or click on any links on the fake website, which can download malware to their device in order to steal important personal data. “Malwares were created the intention of making money. Criminals use malware to steal or hijack data on your computer,” Jessel Tan, an IT and SEO specialist in Dubai, told Expatmedia.net. Tan said malware often originates from “clicking on suspicious ‘reward’ advertisements popping up over the internet”. “Don’t go to suspicious sites and avoid clicking unnecessary sites and pop-up ads,” she advised.
