Teachers donate hair to a student battling cancer

Fourteen teachers and non-teaching staff members from an Indian school cut and donated their hair to support a Grade 5 Pakistani student with cancer. A 10-year-old girl from the International Indian School in Baniyas West, Abu Dhabi, was diagnosed with cancer around a month ago. While the young girl battles against leukemia in a hospital, the school staff has decided to show their support by cutting and donating their hair. “With this gesture, we wish to inspire and encourage the community members to offer their support with such actions. People with cancer lose their hair while undergoing chemotherapy. So, we can donate our hair; it will grow back,” the principal, Dr. Beno Kurien, said. The school reached out to Premi Mathew, the creator of Hair for Hope India, to lead the event and inspire others. “I think this is for the first time that teachers are donating their hair to cancer patients. They are also donating a smile. This is something that the world has never seen,” Premi said. Premi, a Dubai citizen, is a cancer survivor who works to raise awareness about the need for early detection. BKM/ Expat Media
