Search for missing crew of sunken UAE ship continues

  DUBAI – The search continued on Friday (March 18) for two missing crew members of a UAE cargo ship that sank off the coast of Iran. The Dubai-based operator of cargo vessel Al Salmy 6 confirmed that two people have yet to be found. The ship sank near the Assalouyeh port in southern Iran on Thursday (March 17) following severe weather. “The remaining two crew are still missing and search going on,” according to Salem Al Makrani Cargo in a statement. On Thursday, Iranian teams rescued 27 of the 30 crew members. One crew member was saved by crew of tanker Front Savannah, which responded to the distress call. The crew members were from Ethiopia, India, Pakistan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. According to ship operator Salem Al Makrani Cargo, a distress alert was sent by the ship captain at 3am on Thursday. Waves reached up to six metres that day, according to weather reports. The ship started facing rough weather on March 16, a day after leaving Dubai’s Al Hamriya Port. It was expected to reach Umm Qasr Port in Basra, Iraq on March 18. The Al Salmy 6 was a cargo vessel used to transport vehicles to Iraq. The ship was built in 1983 and was 138-metres long.
