SHARJAH - One of the biggest mosques in Sharjah recently opened to worshippers in the Maysaloon area. The Fatima Al Zahra Mosque was inaugurated on Thursday by His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah. The mosque, built at an estimated costs of more than Dh21 million, overlooks Clock Square and can accommodate more than 800 worshippers. The mosque sits on an area of 1,388 square metres, with a total area of 11,000 square metres that includes a number of parking spaces, a library, a guard room and a special prayer room for women. In terms of design, the mosque's Islamic architectural style is inspired by the Fatimid-stone design. Outside, two minarets towering at 40 metres high are prominent structures. Inside, an 800-square metre carpet decks the floor. In the main prayer area, a five-metre long crystal chandelier is suspended from the ceiling. There are 16 similar chandeliers inside the mosque.
