The driverless miniature cars will patrol the emirate by the end of the year
DUBAI – The Dubai Police and Singaporean company OTSAW Digital are developing miniature driverless police cars that will roam the city's streets by the end of the year. The police said the self-driving vehicles called O-R3 will be about the same size as a child's toy car and will each have a biometric software that will scan for wanted criminals, crime suspects and persons of interest in a crime. 1st Lt. Salim Al Merri of the Dubai Police department of smart services, said: "Self-driving patrols will be equipped with cameras that will be connected to Dubai Police Head Quarters to show live footage of what's going on in the city's streets. Also, the car will be equipped with a drone and fingerprint scanners to better prepare Dubai Police for any consequence." The driverless police car project is in line with Smart Dubai initiative that seeks to make Dubai the first city in the world to have O-R3 in operation. The agreement between the Dubai Police and OTSAW Digital was signed by Dubai Police Commander Maj. Gen. Abdullah Khalifa Al Merri and OTSAW Digital chief executive officer Ling Bing at the Dubai Police headquarters. Al Merri said: "Dubai Police are keen to get the latest technology to fight crime. We always search for the best technology to serve our police work for a safer and smarter city. We seek to augment operations with the help of technology such as robots. We aim for streets to be safe and peaceful even without heavy police patrol. We always look to achieve Dubai's vision of becoming a Smart City. We expect it will be ready during the next Gitex fair." The Dubai Police will send a team headed by Lieutenant Salim to OTSAW Digital's office in Singapore to take part and supervise the final stages of building the self-driving car.
