Self-medication a growing problem in UAE, study reveals; stricter rules need to be imposed to curb practice

  AJMAN - Researchers have recommended stricter rules against "an epidemic of self-medication" by patients in the UAE. A research paper by the Ajman University of Science and Technology cited cost-cutting and convenience as factors why patients, with the aid of some pharmacists, are resorting to self- medication to treat minor ailments. The research paper said pharmacists are not supposed to put the health of patients in the UAE at risk as it noted that more residents opt to save cash and time by not consulting doctors. The research paper cited problems of antibiotic misuse, wrong diagnosis and erroneously taking drug combinations that put the lives of patients at risk as growing health issues in the UAE. The researchers conducted face to-face interviews of participants of the study to look into their behavior and attitudes. They found out that the participants chose to self-medicate because of the high cost of consulting a doctor, convenience in visiting a pharmacy, and the wrong perception of the simplicity of their condition. Meanwhile, the researchers said pharmacists were the main sources of diagnosis as well as medication leaflets, family members, and previous use of medicines.
