Several UAE schools suspend in-person classes due to Cyclone Shaheen

DUBAI - Several schools in the UAE have suspended in-person classes due to Cyclone Shaheen, which is expected to make landfall on Sunday evening (October 3). UAE authorities have announced that schools in several areas will have distance learning on October 3 and 4 as a precautionary measure. In Ajman, authorities announced that in-person classes will be suspended in Masfoot and Manama until further notice. In Ras Al Khaimah, the RAK Police General Headquarters directed all public sector schools to shift to remote learning. Meanwhile, Sharjah Private Education Authority announced that schools in Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Deba Al Hisn will also move to online learning for two days. In Dubai, the Supreme Committee of Crisis and Disaster Management announced distance learning for Hatta schools on Sunday and Monday. According to the National Centre of Meteorology (NCM), the centre of the cyclone is 440km away from the coast of Fujairah. NCM said Cyclone Shaheen will continue towards the coasts of Oman and by Sunday afternoon, parts of the UAE will be affected, including Al Ain and the southern and central regions. The weather forecaster said the cyclone will bring “rains of different intensity that lead to the flash flooding in the valleys and torrents and water will accumulate over some low areas”. Cyclone Shaheen is predicted to intensify into a category 1 tropical cyclone. UAE authorities have issued a warning to residents to avoid beaches, wadis and mountainous areas. ICA/Expat Media
