Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, laid the foundation stone on Thursday (May 7) for the Abu Al Kizan Marine Village project in Khorfakkan, marking another major tourism and urban development initiative in the emirate. The large-scale waterfront project forms part of Sheikh Dr. Sultan’s long-term vision to strengthen tourism infrastructure, improve urban development, and enhance quality of life across Sharjah’s cities. Spanning approximately 7 million square feet, the Abu Al Kizan development draws architectural inspiration from Italy’s famous coastal villages, particularly the traditional Ligurian style, while incorporating Islamic architectural elements. The design features colourful terraced buildings clustered around a natural harbour carved into rocky terrain overlooking the sea, creating panoramic coastal views within an integrated natural setting. Officials briefed Sheikh Dr. Sultan on the project’s facilities, which include green spaces, a main boulevard promenade, a beach, and interconnected road and pedestrian networks aimed at creating a comprehensive environment for residents and tourists. The name “Abu Al Kizan” carries both environmental and cultural significance. “Kizan” is the plural form of “Koz”, a type of large shellfish from the mollusc family, reflecting the project’s close connection to the marine environment and coastal heritage of Khorfakkan. Strategically located near major landmarks such as Khorfakkan Corniche, the Old Souq, Khorfakkan Port, and Al Suhub Rest Area, the project is expected to strengthen the city’s appeal as both a tourism and investment destination. The development will include 201 land plots designated for 285 buildings of varying designs, including residential villas, multi-storey apartment buildings, and mixed-use commercial and residential structures. The project will also feature commercial spaces, offices, a hotel, and a mosque as part of an integrated urban community. Environmental sustainability has also been incorporated into the masterplan, with authorities highlighting efforts to preserve marine biodiversity and minimise ecological impact. Officials said the project’s building heights and layouts were designed to suit the natural terrain while protecting habitats for marine and coastal life through sustainable environmental standards. Khorfakkan has increasingly emerged as one of the UAE’s leading east coast tourism destinations, attracting visitors with its mountains, beaches, heritage areas, and growing list of infrastructure projects.
