A historic defence tower that once protected farmland and water sources in Al Dhaid Oasis has reopened to visitors after a careful restoration that brings Sharjah’s past back into focus. Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the restored Al Mudarissa Tower on Saturday (February 7). Located at the north-eastern entrance of Al Dhaid Oasis, the landmark stands as a renewed symbol of the emirate’s commitment to preserving its cultural and architectural heritage. During the ceremony, Sheikh Dr Sultan unveiled the commemorative plaque marking the official reopening. The restoration reflects his vision of transforming heritage sites into living landmarks that tell the story of the place and its people to future generations while strengthening Sharjah’s position on the regional and international cultural tourism map. The Ruler viewed photographs documenting the restoration process and examined displays of traditional agricultural crafts and practices. These exhibits highlight how communities once relied on palm trees and agricultural products for survival. Date palms, in particular, played a central role in ensuring food security and sustaining life in the oasis. Al Mudarissa Tower occupies a total area of 6,346 square metres and is surrounded by 1,545 square metres of landscaped green space. Modern lighting now frames the tower and surrounding walkways, enhancing its visibility from a distance and creating a welcoming atmosphere for evening visitors. The tower was originally part of the integrated defence system of Al Dhaid Oasis. It played a crucial role in monitoring and securing agricultural land while protecting water sources and crops. Built in traditional local style using clay sourced from the surrounding environment, the cylindrical structure rests on a stone foundation designed to protect it from erosion. Its base sits on a natural hillock, giving defenders a strategic vantage point over the oasis. Architectural features include a raised entrance for defensive purposes, multiple storeys, observation openings and firing ports. A narrow internal staircase leads to the roof, where defenders once kept watch. Battlements with alternating projecting and recessed sections rise above the walls, providing both protection and improved observation range. The surrounding remains of the original structure reveal the natural erosion that occurred over time, underscoring the tower’s authenticity and age. The restoration was carried out according to established archaeological standards, using traditional materials and techniques to preserve the tower’s original architectural elements without compromising its historical integrity. In December 2023, Al Dhaid Fort and Falaj Al Dhaid, including Al Mudarissa Tower, were inscribed on the ICESCO World Heritage List. The international recognition affirms the site’s historical and cultural value and highlights its importance as an example of defensive architecture connected to agriculture. Visitors to Al Dhaid can combine a stop at Al Mudarissa Tower with nearby attractions such as Al Dhaid Fort, Falaj Al Dhaid and the Al Dhaid Wildlife Museum.
